What is a Punchout Catalog?

A punchout catalog lets institutional buyers browse a supplier's product catalog directly from their procurement system (Ariba, Coupa, Jaggaer) without leaving the platform. The buyer 'punches out' to the supplier's website, shops normally, then the cart is transferred back to the procurement system as a purchase requisition.

cXML vs OCI

cXML (Commerce XML) is the dominant protocol, used by Ariba, Coupa, and most North American procurement platforms. The flow: PunchOutSetupRequest → supplier redirects buyer → buyer shops → PunchOutOrderMessage returns the cart. OCI (Open Catalog Interface) is SAP's protocol, common in European procurement. Both achieve the same result — connecting buyers to suppliers — but the implementation details differ significantly.

When Do You Need Punchout?

If you sell to institutions — universities, hospitals, government agencies, Fortune 500 companies — you likely need punchout. These buyers have procurement systems that require structured catalog integrations. Without punchout, you're limited to manual PO processing, which is slow and error-prone.

Build vs Buy

Middleware services like TradeCentric and Punchout2Go charge $50-150/connection/month. For 4+ connections, that's $2,400-7,200/year. At Fowara, we build punchout directly into the platform — eliminating middleware fees entirely while giving you full control over the buyer experience.
